LOMBARDI - Staged Reading

Lombardi
by Eric Simonson
"Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything." Few figures in American sports history loom as large as Vince Lombardi — and yet, few know the real story of Lombardi the man: his inspirations, his passions, and his ability to drive people to achieve what they never thought possible.
Set during one week of the 1965 season, the play follows a Look Magazine reporter, Michael McCormick, who arrives in Green Bay wanting to find out what makes Lombardi win. But the players are wary of talking, so Michael turns to Lombardi's wife, Marie, for answers. What he uncovers is a portrait far more layered than any headline — a driven, complicated man shaped by faith, family, and an unrelenting hunger for excellence.
Written by Academy Award winner and Steppenwolf Theatre Company member Eric Simonson and based on the bestselling biography When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss, Lombardi brought the Hall of Fame coach to Broadway in 2010, starring Dan Lauria and Tony nominee Judith Light, and directed by Tony nominee Thomas Kail. For Wisconsin audiences, this is more than a play about football — it's a story about home.
