There is nothing more magical than reading a great book to a child! And there is something extra special about reading a book written by someone whom your child has met in person. On Sunday, May 19, The Caramel Crisp Bookstore will be hosting a wonderful group of children’s authors from right here in the Oshkosh area at the second annual Local Children’s Author Book Fair.
What a great opportunity for your family to meet the creators of the books that they love! And what a great chance for parents to find some excellent books to keep their children immersed in reading over the summer months.
There will be some new faces at the 2024 Book Fair, along with many returning favorites! We are excited to welcome Bob Allen to this year’s fair. Bob is the author of a series of amazing children’s books about fishing, including Walther the Walleye, Battle of the Bass, Walter Under the Ice, and Monica the Muskie. He has also penned a book about camping in the Canadian wilderness, called Fly-in to the Boonies. Bob is the recipient of the Midwest Book Award and the Mom’s Choice Award for his wonderful stories.
The Book Fair will also be welcoming Deb Biechler, a local kindergarten teacher who has penned a lovely story all about berry picking, called Berry Hullabaloo. Find out who loves berries (and berry picking) in this celebration of summer eating and reading! Enjoy raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and more, along with a girl, her canine friend, and a variety of wild animals.
If you would like your child to develop a passion for our state and its beautiful wilderness areas, then Tim Fox is the children’s author for you. Tim was a teacher for 17 years and shares his love of the Wisconsin wilderness through his young reader books. His titles include A Place for You, A Place to Grow, Journeys, an Ice Age Adventure, and Journeys 2, an Ice Age Adventure.

The Children’s Book Fair is VERY excited to announce the release of a brand new children’s book by local author Michele Bohnert! Michele has already written a wonderful story about a young girl and her grandpa spending time together called Fishing with Grandpa. Her new book which comes out on May 18th, is called Quilting with Grandma! Don’t miss this chance to grab this great brand new book and get it signed by the author.

One very special feature of our book fair this year is the presence of two authors who write for middle readers – and are young people themselves! Cassandra Kohanski has written a series of fantasy books for young readers set in a magical alternate reality, called the Fantasy Frames series. Sierra Burchby is the author of two books set in the Minecraft Universe: The Games and The Griefers of the 3 Dimensions. It is so important to support local artists and doubly so when the artists are young and just getting started. Stop in on May 19th at the Book Fair and meet these amazing young writers.

Returning authors include Ginny Gillmam, author of The Christmas Stowaway. Jacqueline Paske Gill, a local teacher and library professional, has illustrated over 25 children's books, 8 of which she has also written. Mary Ann Noe is the author of Hannah’s Eyes, a story of magical worlds, featuring a young heroine. Susan Drexler has written some wonderfully educational stories celebrating the natural world, the Island Boy series. And Erin and Kent Barnard of Sea Bear Press will once again be on hand with their award winning Rhino and Dino books. Kent has a brand new book, called Mom needs a Dinosaur, perfect for Mother’s Day reading.
Beloved local caricature artist Ray Rocker and Elle Binder with her beautiful handmade bookmarks will also be on hand at the Fair this year! Your kids can help to create their own bookmark to go with the wonderful books they will be discovering at the Fair. Caramel Crisp Bookstore will also have a wonderful assortment of books from our own collection on sale for 25% off the cover price.
Last, but definitely not least, Caramel Crisp Bookstore will be collecting books for the Winnebago Area Literacy Council during the Fair. Both children’s books and books for adults may be donated.
This is only a sampling of the great authors and artists that will be attending The Caramel Crisp Book Fair! There is no cost to attend The Caramel Crisp Local Children’s Author Book Fair. Mark your calendars now and make plans to attend with your family – your children will thank you!
