Beginner Class, Week 9
Griffith's Gnat. The Griffith’s Gnat is a classic dry fly that imitates a single adult midge or a cluster of midges on the water’s surface. Its simple design—peacock herl body and grizzly hackle—creates a natural sheen and footprint that closely mimics real insects. This fly attracts trout that are sipping tiny bugs in calm water, especially during midge hatches in colder months. It should be fished on a dead drift with a fine tippet, often to rising fish in slow-moving pools or tailouts.
