Brief History:
Llanyrafon Manor Farm is a grade II listed building dating back to the mid 1500's and is the oldest non-religious building in Cwmbran. There was a timber-framed medieval building thought to date back to the 13th Century on the site which was possibly used by the monks of the Llantarnam Abbey (some of the remains can still be seen today).
The Griffiths family owned the property for centuries, 1629 was the first recorded history of the family owning the property due to a will left by Walter Griffith. there was a bitter feud between the Griffith and Morgan families which only ended with a joining of families by marriage, twice! The house remained in the Griffiths family until 1886 when it passed to the Laybourne family. The house remained in use though was divided up and became a farm.
During WW1 it was recorded that 3 Italian prisoners of war worked on the farm. Members of the Women's Land Army worked the farm during WW2. After the war the manor's historical importance was officially recognised, the building was brought by the corporation set up to develop the new town of Cwmbran but was boarded up and unsafe in the 1970s. it passed into Torfaen council's hands in 2008.
During renovation works conkers were found underneath the floor boards upstairs, it is believed that this was known as the secret room where older boys hid away in fear of being enlisted into the army for the war.
