National Whale and Dolphin Watch is a UK-wide citizen science event run by the Sea Watch Foundation each summer, where volunteers join land and boat-based surveys to record sightings of whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
Taking place from Saturday 25th July to Sunday 2nd August in 202, the event supports marine conservation by monitoring species distribution through public involvement. In Cornwall, the Seaquest Southwest team from Cornwall Wildlife Trust will lead four public surveys at key headlands across the county.
Date: Saturday 1st August 2026
Location: The Lizard, near Helston, Cornwall, TR12 7NT Meet the Seaquest Southwest team at on the point. They will be wearing hi-vis jackets and have a Cornwall Wildlife Trust flag.
Time: 11am – 1pm
The survey includes settling into a sea-watching session, scanning the water for wildlife sightings.
There’s time for breaks, and attendees are encouraged to bring a hot drink in a flask, snacks, and binoculars if available. Please wear or bring warm, waterproof clothing, and sturdy footwear, as the event takes place on exposed cliffs, where weather conditions can be unpredictable. Safety is a top priority, so be prepared for uneven terrain and cold winds. Everyone is welcome, making it a perfect activity for families, individuals, and nature lovers alike.
Getting there: To reach Lizard Point by road, take the A3083 south from Helston; the National Trust car park opposite the lighthouse is signposted. Parking is free for members; non-members pay £2 for 1 hour, £4 for 4 hours, and £6 for over 4 hours, payable by cash or via the JustPark app (from 3 July 2025). Use postcode TR12 7NT or what3words ///explores.mouths.glow for the Lizard Point car park, and TR12 7NZ or ///interval.remain.quitter for Lizard Village Green (alternative parking).
Lizard Point lies on the South West Coast Path with many local footpaths, and visitors can pick up maps and information at the on-site hut.
By bus, take First Bus route 34 from Helston to the village of Lizard, with the stop just half a mile from Lizard Point and about 2 miles from Kynance Cove.
Route & Terrain: Partly accessible grounds with some sheer cliffs. There are surfaced paths to viewpoints overlooking Lizard Point. Cliffs are dangerous (children should be supervised).
Toilets: Toilets, including accessible toilets, at Lizard Point car park.
Accessibility: Assistance animals are welcome. While there are no designated quiet spaces, the Southwest Coast Path offers peaceful spots for visitors to rest and enjoy the stunning coastal views.
Additional Tips: Wear weather-appropriate clothing, bring snacks if needed, and check local weather before starting. The coastal path can be windy and slippery.
