Living with Aphasia: Exploring Decision Making, Communication and Research
About this Event
Many people assume that language is essential for thinking and decision-making. But is that really the case?
If you are a stroke survivor, live with aphasia, or support someone who does, join us for a welcoming and interactive event at HOME Manchester, exploring the relationship between language, thinking and decision-making.
Through personal experiences and research insights from Manchester Metropolitan University and Speakeasy (Greater Manchester's charity for people with aphasia) attendees will gain a deeper understanding of aphasia and explore evidence that challenges common assumptions about language and the brain. The event will highlight how complex thinking, reasoning and decision-making can remain intact even when communication is affected.
Activities and demonstrations will offer opportunities to ask questions, share experiences, and connect with others in a friendly, supportive environment.
The event also celebrates the launch of a new Manchester Metropolitan University support group for stroke survivors and people living with aphasia, commencing in January 2027. The group will offer a range of activities designed to support communication, cognition, movement, wellbeing and social connection.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the way that suits them best, whether that's sharing experiences, asking questions, taking part in activities, or listening and enjoying the conversation.
Refreshments will be provided; please let us know if you have any dietary requirements or allergies at [email protected].
This FREE event organised by Manchester Metropolitan University is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2026, the UK's largest celebration of social sciences research.
