Join a knowledgeable historical reenactor on a candlelit tour of one of Salem, New Hampshire's most historic properties! While America's Stonehenge is best known for its ancient ruins, this hill played a significant role in early American history as well. The Pattee family was heavily involved in colonial and American history from the 17th century to the 19th century. Mr. Pattee's ancestor, Peter Pattee, immigrated to the New World in 1675. Shortly after, he moved to Haverhill, Massachusetts, where his descendants would become involved in such important events as the opening of the first mills on the Spicket River, the border conflicts with New France and the Native Americans, the founding of Salem, New Hampshire, and the fight for independence in the American Revolution. Jonathan Pattee himself would go on to join the cause of abolition and help people to escape slavery on the Underground Railroad.On this tour, you travel back in time and tour the Pattee family's property with a historian dressed in period attire. He will point out where the family barn once stood, and where the house foundation is still marked by the bricks from the chimney. On the journey, you will hear tales that are both unbelievable and ordinary, as your guide recounts stories from daily life in early America - stories that are memorialized in the property and the Pattee family artifacts housed at the museum.
