Travel Back 150 years ago to 1876!

This year marks the 150th anniversary of one of the most pivotal and debated events in western American history. As compelling and polarizing today as it was in 1876, the legacy of the battle continues to shape how we understand the American West.

This weekend, the park will focus on the wider picture of the Little Bighorn campaign by recreating and showcasing aspects of the ‘before and after’ moments of the famous battle. Through immersive interpretation, we will recreate life at Fort Abraham Lincoln in the summer of 1876, highlighting the logistical preparations that launched the campaign and the immediate aftermath that followed the fateful clash.

The event begins in May 1876, as companies of the 7th U.S. Cavalry transition from garrison routine to active field service in the tense days leading up to the campaign. As the weekend progresses, the portrayal shifts to July 5, 1876, when wounded soldiers returned to the post—bringing with them the human cost of battle and news that would reverberate across the nation.

Reenactors will vividly interpret both phases of this story: the disciplined transformation of a cavalry company preparing for the field, and later, the somber reality of convalescing wounded men in a recreated post hospital. Civilian life will also be brought to life through portrayals of officers’ wives, military laundresses, and laborers, offering a fuller picture of the frontier military community.

Experience a dynamic living history weekend that captures both the energy of a frontier army post on the brink of a major campaign and the sobering aftermath of one of America’s most (in)famous battles. Educational programs, scheduled talks, and immersive vignettes will run throughout the weekend, providing deeper insight into the people and events of 1876.
