Living Energy Workshop @ Phycologica

In collaboration with Studio Blue Green, Biodesign Collective presents this workshop as part of the immersive exhibition Phycologica – encountering algal luminescence at Centrespace, Bristol, on 26 October.

The session explores two types of bio-batteries: algae-based and mud-based fuel cells. Together, we’ll build functional prototypes using recycled materials and investigate how microbes and plants can generate clean, off-grid power.

By imagining energy as something grown rather than extracted, the workshop serves as an entry point into designing with living systems. It invites us to rethink what power looks like, how it’s made, and who gets to shape the systems that sustain us.
