In April, Notam invites you to a four-day Live Visuals workshop with video artist A-li-ce.
If you are curious about Live Visuals, this course may be something for you. Live Visuals is an exciting field in continuous development, with many opportunities for creative and artistic work, and with the software Resolume Arena, you can easily get started with advanced work in a short time. If Live Visuals can seem complicated, the idea behind this course is to teach participants solid and good practices to start your journey into this field.
Individual guidance will be provided along the way, and teamwork will be also encouraged.

The aim of the course
The goal of the course is to provide a fundamental overview of Live Visual performance and VJ practices, so that participants can produce their own works after the course. The course requires no prior knowledge, and both professional practitioners and beginners are welcome.
The course provides thorough training in theoretical foundations, the Resolume Arena software, and the artistic workflow of Live Visuals. This will be especially useful for artists, musicians, performing artists, technicians, and other people who work with, for example, visual arts, lighting technology, stage design and technology, video, film, sound and music.

Live Visuals and Resolume
Live Visuals can be described as real-time production and manipulation of visual elements such as video, animation and graphics performed live, often synchronized to sound. For example, you can use a combination of pre-recorded media, live camera feeds and image processing, displayed on screens, projectors or other surfaces. Live Visuals are central to everything from concerts, theatre and clubs to art installations and experimental film.
Technical solutions for working with live media have existed for a long time, but in recent years the tools have become readily available and easy to use. Many new possibilities for creative visual work have opened up in the last years, making it easier to learn the fundamental techniques.
The software we use during this course is Resolume Arena, which offers powerful capabilities for real-time video mixing, advanced projection mapping, multi-screen output, lighting control (DMX), and much more. In Resolume Arena, you can work with complex forms of Live Visuals in an easy way. Resolume Arena is available for macOS and Windows.

More about the course
In this course, we will dive into the field of Live Visual performance, and you will develop your own project in combination with sound and/or space and movement. The course combines theory, technique and practical application. You will get a historical overview of Live Visual performance and the archaeology behind VJ and Live Visuals practices in visual art, film and music.
The course provides a thorough solid base to the Resolume Arena software, including video mapping. Furthermore, we will look at the technical workflow for Live Visuals, including video codecs, hardware devices and video projectors. We will also conduct live experiments and improvisation sessions along the way.
During the course, you will have the opportunity to work both individually and collectively. The course ends with a presentation, where we can share the creative process with the audience. We will design the space and the event together.
