Live Sound Basics - a series of four workshops designed to teach basic skills for mixing live bands, with an emphasis on working with acoustic music.
This page has tickets for the full series of classes. Tickets for individual classes will be available starting January 20th.
Wed. 2/5 Session 1: An overview of mixing console controls and their functions, and an introduction to the concepts of signal flow, gain and gain structure.
Wed. 2/12 Session 2: Equalization - what frequencies are, what they sound like, how to use tools like parametric and graphic eq, ways to eliminate feedback, and system and room tuning
Wed. 2/19 Session 3: Signal processing - how to use compression, reverb, and other effects to polish your mix
Wed. 2/26 Session 4: Understanding and working with different types of microphones, pickups, and DIs
Workshops will be co-taught by Tesser Call and Brian Walker:
Tesser Call is a Freight and Salvage sound engineer with more than 20 years of experience doing live sound reinforcement, specializing in acoustic and ethnic music. In addition to working at the Freight, she works freelance doing live sound in the California Bay Area. She has worked with artists such as John McCutcheon, Bruce Molsky, and Alasdair Fraser, and she has toured with the Old Blind Dogs, the Black Brothers, and the Martin Hayes Quartet.
Brian Walker is a longtime Freight and Salvage sound engineer with 40 years of professional experience as a house sound engineer, a touring front-of-house mixer for bands such as Montreux and the Turtle Island String Quartet, and a recording studio engineer. He specializes in recording live acoustic music.
