About this Event
Join us for the launch of In Cascades at Victoria Park Bandstand, a collaboration between 360 students at Chisenhale Primary School and musicians Richard Jones, Fran Lobo, and Koichi Yamanoha.
Each summer since 2021, all students and staff at Chisenhale Primary School collaborate on a project with artists connected to Chisenhale Gallery, creating new work in response to the exhibitions they encounter in the gallery space.
The most ambitious project to date took place across 2023-2024 with musicians Richard Jones (Ligeti Quartet), Koichi Yamanoha (Grimm Grimm) and Fran Lobo. Using Lotus Laurie Kang’s critically acclaimed Chisenhale commission In Cascades as inspiration, each year group worked with the musicians to create soundscapes, using innovative recording techniques to capture the result.
Just as Lotus Laurie Kang's In Cascades represents layers of embodied history in suspended screens of photographic film, the groups similarly explored how we can hold layers of memory together in a series of new pieces for voices, viola and tape loops - sonic moments suspended in time.
Join us for the launch of their unique project at Victoria Park Bandstand, with performances and activities led by Richard, Fran, and Koichi, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30th, as part of the bandstand's summer season of music.
The project is supported by Goodman Gallery and the Ford Foundation.
“From the moment they come in, the children are making music. Their whole experience in the gallery working with us is a creative act; every element of the workshop is integral to building a larger-scale piece. When you set up the right conditions - the installation itself, an acoustically interesting space, three musicians with different disciplines, and the singular energy and ideas of each group of children - something both exploratory and creatively meaningful can unfold.”
