Jazz Generations Initiative New Orleans, in partnership with Lula Elzy and co-sponsored by the Jazz and Heritage Foundation Wein Center invites you to Live Music in Conversation: An Oral History Program co-hosted by Lula Elzy and Herlin Riley, featuring the “First Lady of Jazz” vocalist Germaine Bazzle and American R&B and jazz pianist Lawrence Cotton.

Riley and Elzy will take audiences on musical journeys chronicling the lives, musical influences, joys and challenges of these legendary New Orleans jazz artists while they tell their stories in their own words. The program will also feature a live set with Derek Douget, Oscar Rossignoli, Peter Harris, and Herlin Riley.

The Jazz Generations Initiative (JGI) cultivates creative futures in jazz performance and scholarship by celebrating the music’s past and keeping its present rooted in community.

This Mellon-funded project will focus on supporting jazz musicians, scholarship, interdisciplinary and multigenerational programming in both New Orleans and New York, connecting two important port cities that share geographic features, diverse populations, and a thriving jazz culture that is in motion and in conversation.

Jazz Generations Initiative New Orleans is an innovative interdisciplinary residency, fellowship and creative hub based in New Orleans, offering opportunities for gatherings based on experimentation, creativity, and interdisciplinary explorations. JGI New Orleans draws inspiration from the city of New Orleans and its connections with the African diaspora, the Global South, and the Gulf South region.

Jazz Generations Initiative Oral History Project

Under the direction of Dr. Brent Hayes Edwards, the Jazz Generations Initiative (JGI) Oral History encompasses long form interviews of musicians and artists in New Orleans and New York. The Oral History Project in New Orleans is managed by musician, composer, and educator Dr. Geovane Santos.
