Live Jazz Featuring the Russell Kirk Ensemble, with Special Guest Mike Kuhl
About this Event
Russell Kirk is a highly acclaimed, Baltimore-based saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. A graduate of the Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute and New York University's Steinhardt School, he is a Buffet Crampon USA Performing Artist and a 6-time Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award winner. His versatile playing has led to collaborations with acts across jazz, R&B, and pop, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, The Temptations, and the Cab Calloway Orchestra. In addition to leading his own Russell Kirk All Stars Band, he is an active educator. He conducts annual masterclasses and has held residencies at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall. He records for the Inner Circle Music label and his distinct sound has been heard on television and film, including his work on ABC's reboot of The Wonder Years and collaborations with Saturday Night Live.
Percussionist Mike Kuhl has been a fixture of the Baltimore/DC/NYC scenes for decades performing straight up jazz, avant-garde, Venezuelan jazz, and beyond. He is both an alumnus and current faculty member at Towson University. In this sonic adventure, Kuhl takes the stage as a solo artist, drawing from an astonishing collection of percussive instruments, along with everyday objects and an array of electronics, that manipulate and expand his sounds. The result is a richly layered performance that often gives the illusion of an entire ensemble.
Accompanying artists for the performance will include the exemplary Theljon Allen - trumpet, Dan Ryan (of Super City fame) - jazz guitar, Roman Kirk - bass.
Sky Stage is an all-ages venue (under 12 free), beer/wine for 21+ with ID.
