Live at Toorak: Maayan Licht, Coloratura Queen

“One of the absolute shooting stars of the international opera scene.” - Ruhr Nachrichten
Imagine Farinelli meets Freddie Mercury — and you’re sitting close enough to feel the electricity. Maayan Licht arrives in Australia for his long-awaited debut with a voice so high, so fearless, it feels almost impossible… until you hear it live.
Joined by the brilliant Neal Peres da Costa leading a hand-picked Baroque ensemble, Licht detonates a sequence of arias that are pure theatre: jealousy and swagger, seduction and heartbreak, prayer-like stillness and hurricane-force virtuosity.
The programme is a greatest-hits thrill ride through Baroque opera’s most intoxicating scenes — from Porpora’s Ifigenia in Aulide (“Nel già bramoso petto” / “Allontanata agnella”) to Handel at his most dramatic (“Un pensiero nemico di pace” from Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno, and the famous “Da tempeste il legno infranto” from Giulio Cesare). Vivaldi brings the fire and elegance in equal measure — “Zeffiretti che sussurrate” (Ercole sul Termodonte), the deliciously venomous “Gelosia, tu già rendi l’alma mia” (Ottone in Villa), and the heart-melting “Vedrò con mio diletto” (Il Giustino). And then Handel again, darker and more dangerous: “Verso già l’alma col sangue” from Aci, Galatea e Polifemo.
This isn’t just vocal acrobatics — it’s character, chemistry, and storytelling at full voltage.
A voice like this is rare.
Hearing it this close is rarer still.
