About this Event
Little Forests Durham-Mini Forest Planting Day @ Heber Down Conservation Area
Little Forests Durham is pleased to announce a new and exciting partnership with Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA), Trees for Life, and the Town of Whitby to plant a Miyawaki Mini-Forest in Whitby!
Description: Join us for a fun day of tree planting at the Heber Down Conservation Area! Thanks to a large group of community volunteers, the site was prepared in August 2025 by laying down cardboard, spreading compost and mulch. These materials have been settling over the last few months, creating a nutrient-rich site for the 600 trees and shrubs to be planted. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, connect with nature, and make a positive impact on the environment. No experience necessary, just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to get your hands dirty!
Date: Saturday, October 18, 2025
Location: 5000 Cochrane St, Whitby, ON (North entrance - South of Hwy 7/Winchester Rd W, near the dog park)
Time: 9:30 am
What will we be doing:
You'll be helping us plant 600 native trees and shrubs, spreading mulch, and watering the plants. No experience necessary and all ages are welcome!
What is a Mini Forest?
A mini-forest is a densely planted community of native trees and plants in an area typically the size of a tennis court. Mini forests tend to grow faster, sequester more carbon, and promote more biodiversity than conventionally planted urban trees. Learn more at www.littleforestsdurham.ca
No experience necessary and all ages are welcome!
Note: This is a physical activity that may require lifting materials up to 10kg - please be aware of your limitations.
What to wear and bring:
- Protective work gloves
- Closed-toe shoes or boots
- Reusable water bottle
- Clothes appropriate for the weather
- Sunscreen and mosquito repellent (if necessary)
- Shovels (if possible), but we will have some available as well
- Epi-pen (for those with severe food, insect, or environmental allergies)
Light refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you'd like.
