The Green Basket Group Presents: The Literary Nights Festival – "Inspiring a
Generation of Uncwadi"
A Celebration of Storytelling, Thought, and Cultural Reclamation
East London, South Africa – 8 October 2025– The Green Basket Group is proud to
announce the inaugural Literary Nights Festival, under the theme "Inspiring a
Generation of Uncwadi," taking place from 29 October to 01 November 2026 at
various venues in Vincent, East London.
Born from the weekly reading and reflection sessions at 61 Frere Road, the Literary Nights, the
Literary Night Festival is a direct response to a critical question: How are our stories told? For too
long, the narratives of Black people in the Eastern Cape have been filtered through a Western lens,
often distorting our realities. This festival is a bold initiative to reclaim that narrative power,
celebrating literature as the vital thread that weaves together our memory, gnosis, and social
identity.
"This is more than a book festival; it's a movement to restore pride and intellectual
enterprise, particularly to Black people, while remaining inclusive to all," said a
festival organizer. "We are building on the rich literary traditions of the Eastern Cape
to inspire a new generation of readers, writers, and thinkers."
The festival will unfold as a vibrant tapestry of intellectual and creative exchanges,
featuring:
 Dialogues & In-Conversations with acclaimed authors including book reviews
 Masterclasses: Writing, publishing, distribution & marketing.
 Performances: Live music, including a session on "SA Jazz as Literature."
 Kiddies Reading Competition & Entertainment to foster a love for literature from
a young age.
