BIO:
"Lionel Young is a driven, classically trained violinist with a lifelong devotion to the blues. His band, The Lionel Young Band, has earned numerous regional awards across Colorado and beyond, culminating in their 2011 International Blues Challenge Band Championship. Combined with Young’s 2008 IBC Solo/Duo Championship, this achievement made him the first double champion in IBC history.
Young’s live show is electrifying and deeply expressive, featuring original compositions alongside re‑imagined blues classics by Willie Dixon, Leadbelly, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His award‑winning songs—including “Brown Cloud Over Denver” and the provocative “Hey, O.J.”—balance social commentary with emotional release, carried by his smooth vocals and unmistakable electric violin tone.
Born in Rochester, New York, Lionel Young began violin studies at age six under Anastasia Jempelis at the Eastman School of Music. His classical training continued with Herbert Greenberg (Pittsburgh), Josef Gingold (Indiana University), and Fritz Siegel (Carnegie Mellon University).
Young’s career spans orchestral, chamber, and contemporary music. He has performed with the Pittsburgh Opera‑Ballet Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra, and the Denver Chamber Orchestra, and premiered a solo work by composer William Hill. His versatility led the National Repertory Orchestra to commission him to perform bluegrass and blues during international tours of Japan, Taiwan, and Korea as part of the 1988 Summer Olympic Music Festival."
