What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is a Black American vernacular dance that developed in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s, danced to authentic jazz music. It grew out of Black American communities as a form of joy, expression, and connection. We honour the history and culture of Lindy Hop in our teaching and in the community we are building.
Why take this class?
You want to learn Lindy Hop, Charleston and other Black American vernacular jazz dances so you’re ready to dance and connect on the social dance floor. You might not be sure what they are yet, but you’re looking to make connections, have fun and find community. These classes will get you set up with the core rhythms, patterns and connections used by communities around the world.
Who is it for?
This class is for people who have never been to a dance class or have been attending Lindy Hop/Swing Dancing classes for up to 12 months.
What will I learn?
- Develop a solid foundation in the classic patterns of Lindy Hop, Charleston and authentic jazz; triple steps, kicks, Charleston and more.
- Build a connection to the music to dance authentically.
- Discover classic moves and patterns to get you on the social dance floor.
- The basics of partner dancing, how to connect and dance together.
The aim is to help you feel relaxed, confident, and ready to enjoy the dance floor.
Your teachers
Tanya and Sophie teach together and create a warm, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. We teach both lead and follow roles and encourage dancers to explore either role if they wish. Our focus is on connection, musicality, confidence, and enjoying the dance.
