Summary:
Kissonerga, located on the coast 5km north of Paphos, is a bountiful village with abundant freshwater springs and plentiful agricultural and marine resources. It is renowned as extremely rich in prehistoric archaeological remains. These comprise some of the world’s earliest (Cypro-PPNB) water wells at Kissonerga-Mylouthkia (c. 8300–7000 BC, Peltenburg et al. 2003), an exceptionally long-lived Neolithic–Chalcolithic–Philia settlement at Kissonerga-Mosphilia (c. 7000–2400 BC, Peltenburg et al. 1998), and an important Philia–MC III/LCIA Bronze Age settlement (c. 2600–1600 BC) immediately downslope and partially overlapping Mosphilia at Kissonerga-Skalia. This lecture will consider the local and far-flung connections of the latest occupants of Kissonerga-Mosphilia in tandem with the continuation of the settlement following a shift to Kissonerga-Skalia. With evidence for exploitation of marine and terrestrial resources, the Kissonerga communities enjoyed the best of both worlds, likely traversing inland and by sea to form relationships with other groups and to obtain resources. What drove these communities to interact with others and how did they seek to participate in an increasingly maritime eastern Mediterranean sphere?
