Lindley Learn - Exporting Beauty: Japanese Influences on British Gardens
About this Event
Join RHS Libraries as we delve a little deeper into our collections with our programme of study days.
In this session, hosted by author Fiona Davison, we will discover how Japan’s rich horticultural traditions influenced British gardeners between 1880 – 1930.
Explore the introduction of Japanese plants and garden design features to British gardens in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to create hybrid Anglo-Japanese gardens.
We will draw upon the unique and beautiful collections of the RHS Lindley Library, including our original Yokohama Nursery Co. catalogues from Japan.
The session will be made up of a lecture by Fiona, followed by a tour of selected works from the RHS Lindley Library collections.
There will be regular breaks and light refreshments will be served, plus the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session.

Speaker
Fiona Davison - Fiona has been Head of Libraries and Exhibitions at the RHS since 2012. She has published two books on garden history: (Atlantic Books, 2019) and (Little Toller, 2023).

Event Details
Tickets for this event are limited and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are £20 for RHS members and students, and £25 for non-members. The ticket cost supports the RHS Lindley Library.
The RHS Lindley Library is closed to the public on Mondays. Doors will open to event ticket holders at 1.15pm. This event will take place between the Library and the Council Chamber. Light refreshments will be provided.
Please note that due to the nature of the Edwardian building, it is necessary for participants of the event to be able to independently manage stairs.
