About this Event

The experience

In this immersive sound experience, Laura Maesaka will use crystal bowls to create a field of resonance that opens a liminal space between your body and Houston’s bayous. In addition to the sound meditation, Laura will also lead us through guided visualizations to help you trace the water within you as it travels through the wider watershed, revealing a quiet kinship with these living urban waterways. Inspired by ideas from quantum physics and emerging research on how water may respond to its surroundings, we’ll playfully explore how attention, emotion, and presence might gently reshape the way we relate to the waters that hold our city—inviting feelings of calm, inner spaciousness, and a renewed sense of connection with the place we call home.

This event is free and open to the public, though registration is required.

What to expect

This meditation will be held outdoors, so please dress accordingly knowing that we will remain stationary throughout the duration of the 1-hour meditation. Participants are highly encouraged to bring blankets to sit on. There are some raised flat concrete areas to sit on, as well as space on the ground—either on very fine gravel or grass.
The overlook where the meditation will take place offers a beautiful view of the bayou as it makes its way through downtown. It is situated beneath oak trees, so there will be shade for those who want it.

Getting there

The meditation will take place at Tapley Overlook, which is located near the southern edge of Jamail Skatepark. Free parking is available at Buffalo Bayou Park Parking lot (155 Sabine St.) and is first-come, first served. Additionally, metered parking is avialable along Sabine St.

It is an easy, fully-paved 1-minute walk from the parking lot to Tapley Overlook. Simply head south along Sabine St. (with Buffalo Bayou Park to your right). Just before you reach the play area, follow the paved sidewalk to your right, heading in between the play area (to your left) and the skatepark (to your right). This will lead you directly to the Tapley Overlook, which will be on your right hand side. A map is included in this listing and will also be provided to registered participants via email. The path is fully-accessible, with only a slight decline.

Acknowledgements

This workshop is organized as part of , an exhibition by artists Margaux Crump and Jake Eshelman that wonders what's possible when we collectively reimagine Houston's bayou system as a sacred, fertile community space that nurtures the biodiversity, vitality, and unfolding story of our city. As a satellite program of this exhibition, Liminal Waters is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

About Laura Maesaka

Laura Maesaka is a Houston-based sound alchemist, energy healer, transformational coach, and former energy manager in the oil and gas industry. Trained as a chemical engineer and in shamanic and somatic practices, she now weaves together sound, subtle energy, and nervous-system-aware coaching to create immersive, experiential spaces that are both grounded and expansive. Laura’s work invites participants to experience themselves as multidimensional beings—physical, emotional, and subtle—while exploring how shifts in attention, emotion, and presence can transform their felt relationship to themselves, each other, and the environments they move through every day.
