The Lighthouse Lecture Series welcomes Jora Fogg and Leisyka Parrott presenting "The Power of Public Lands: Grassroots Community Stewardship at Point Arena-Stornetta and the History of the National Conservation Lands" on Saturday, September 20, at 4 p.m. This presentation is part of the Celebrate the Coast event happening all day, September 20, at the Lighthouse, Point Arena-Stornetta Lands, Mendocino College Field Station, and Point Arena City Hall.The Bureau of Land Management's National Conservation Lands turns 25 years old this year, and there is much to celebrate! We'll explore how the youngest system of America's protected public lands came about and the people and grassroots passion for place and activism that expanded the system over the last 25 years. We'll focus on the example of the California Coastal National Monument and the Point Arena-Stornetta unit to highlight this work. We'll also discuss the current status of the National Conservation Lands regarding partnerships and federal funding, and converse about creative solutions in crafting a sustainable future for Point Arena-Stornetta, the California Coastal National Monument, and the National Conservation Lands as a whole.
Jora Fogg
Jora Fogg (she/her) has nearly two decades of experience working for small conservation non-profits in both the scientific and policy spaces. Previously, she spent eight years as Policy Director with the grassroots public lands organization, Friends of the Inyo. Jora lives and works in June Lake, CA, where she spends her free time outdoors, enjoying birding, skiing, hiking, and cycling. She also serves as a Mono County Planning Commissioner and on the board of several local nonprofits in the Eastern Sierra. Jora is originally from the Pacific Northwest and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Evergreen State College with a focus in Ornithology. Jora is currently the California Associate Program Director at the Conservation Lands Foundation, where she works with conservation organizations in northern CA, including along the north and central coasts, Berryessa Snow Mountain, and Carrizo Plain National Monuments.
Leisyka Parrott
Leisyka Parrott (she/her) is the California Coastal National Monument Manager for the Bureau of Land Management. With a background in community partnerships, outreach, education, and interpretation, she has spent her career helping people connect to California’s wild coastline. Leisyka fell in love while watching seabirds and marine mammals along the California and Oregon coast—and brings that same love to her work as a steward for special places like Point Arena-Stornetta.
