About this Event
Welcome to our Cinema Club!
We carefully selected the best films from around the world to showcase different cultures through the art of cinema. Each screening is hosted by someone from the film’s country — adding real cultural context and meaning behind it.
We start with the legendary Ukrainian film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965), directed by visionary filmmaker Sergei Parajanov. It is a visually explosive ode to Ukrainian folklore, love, and loss that feels both timeless and utterly alive.
Why you should join us for this movie?
Often called the Ukrainian Romeo & Juliet, the film set in a remote Ukrainian mountain region (Carpartians) where two young lovers whose families are divided by an old feud. The story draws on local folklore, rituals, and traditions of the Hutsul highland culture. Director Sergei Parajanov transforms it into a dazzling work of cinematic poetry— it is one of the most innovative films ever created. A rare chance to see a true classic on the big screen.
What to expect:
Screening - original Ukrainian language with English subtitles
Curated discussion - presentation of the film from a member of our community with insights and history background.
🎟 Open Entrance: thanks to the EU funding we’re able to make it for free and cover rent-related costs.
