About this Event
Join Will Prentice at McBain Camera's Mayfield location on Tuesday, May 26th, 2-4pm, for a hands-on, high-energy workshop that redefines what a portrait can be. Presented in partnership with Elinchrom and Tether Tools, this session dives into the art of creating “moving portraits” – images that feel alive, layered and full of motion.
You’ll explore the creative tension between continuous LED light and the precision of strobe, learning how to blend the two for striking, cinematic results. Learn how to choose between fast flash durations and High speed sync. Add in gels, long exposures, flash sequences and a bit of controlled chaos and suddenly your portraits start to breathe, swirl and tell deeper stories.
We’ll also get practical about why shooting tethered with Tether Tools Optima cables into Capture One isn’t just a luxury – it’s a game-changer. See your images evolve in real time, refine your lighting on the fly and push your creativity further with immediate feedback.
This isn’t about playing it safe. It’s about experimenting, breaking familiar patterns and walking away with techniques that will make your work stand out in a sea of “nice photos.”
Bring your curiosity. Leave with images that move. Literally.
An award-winning portrait, fine art and commercial photographer for 30 plus years, Will Prentice is a contributor to PHOTONews magazine, host of PHOTONewsTV, owner of Captura Photography+Imaging and Technical Support/Brand Manager for Amplis Foto, Canada’s largest distributor of photographic equipment. His work has also been presented in RMG Exposed and published in Durham: A 4 Seasons County and Rail Ties: A Story of Love.
A valued instructor who shares with photographers across Canada, Will teaches photographers of all skill levels how to improve their craft – from creative photo projects to picking the right gear for their needs to flattering lighting and getting the best expressions to creating final images for screen and print. Will believes that knowledge should be shared, not hoarded. His unique style of highly detailed images with perfect tonality, wide dynamic range and stunning colour is instantly recognizable. Commercial clients rely on Will’s creative eye and mastery of lighting.
When he’s not behind the camera or in front of a class, you’ll find Will outdoors in any weather – usually on one of his bikes or enjoying time with his grandchildren.
