In recent decades, practices like yoga and transcendental meditation have swept through the Western world, promising calm, clarity, and balance. Many Christians have noticed their benefits for mind and body—but have approached them cautiously, aware of their roots in “Eastern religion.” Some churches have even dismissed them outright as “pagan” or “steeped in mysticism.”Yet the Western Church is not the only Church. From the time of the Apostles, an Eastern stream of Christianity has flowed throughout the Ancient Near East, the eastern Mediterranean, and West Asia. In that tradition, mind-body practices closely resembling yoga and meditation have been an integral part of prayer for centuries. As the West begins to rediscover the value of such practices, Christians would do well to “look East” and reclaim the treasures of our own spiritual heritage.
Join Father Patrick for a series of discussions on prayer practices largely forgotten by Western Christians, with opportunities to experience them in a group setting. Topics will include cultivating silence, centering the mind, engaging the body, and integrating the senses—all aimed at fostering a holistic approach to Christian prayer: mind, body, and spirit.
🍽 Dinner at 5:30 p.m. | Class at 6:00 p.m.
