We are running a lifejacket clinic, flare disposal and water safety day on Saturday March 29 from 11-3pm at Fowey lifeboat station. At one of our previous clinics a team carried out safety checks on 169 lifejackets. Over 50% needed a critical safety part replacing, meaning that had they been used in an emergency, they may not have worked and could potentially have caused loss of life. 11 lifejackets were condemned outright as being unfit for use. A further 51 needed new capsules, and 26 required replacement cylinders. The RNLI water safety team will help you to check your lifejacket to keep it safe and fully functioning and will show you how to check for wear and tear and defects. They will also show you how to carry out simple maintenance checks and will advise on parts you need to replace. TMS will be there selling replacement parts.
HM Coastguard has stopped disposing of expired or redundant flares handed in by private individuals. You now need to use a third-party service to dispose of flares. You may be breaking the law if you do not make sure flares are disposed of safely, to prevent any risk to other people or property. You can bring along your old out-of-date flares to have them safely disposed of, at a cost of £3 per flare. If you buy a new replacement flare, there is no charge for disposal.
Please note we have the right to refuse flares over a certain age and excess quantities.
The RNLI water safety team will be at the all day running water safety sessions and refreshments will be available.
