Life Drawing Workshop

Join a life-drawing workshop led by artist Gaby Sahhar, focusing on queer bodies.

For the first part of the session you will be exploring materials related to queerness in our permanent gallery, Being Human.

You will then go into the Forum to create a large-scale installation. You’ll do this by working as individuals or groups, and will use your imagination to redefine what a queer body looks like through drawing.

For the second part of the session, there will be three trans and non-binary models for you to draw against the backdrop of your installation. The models will be clothed. As part of this process, we will also be looking at images from the James Gardiner Collection to explore ideas around vulnerability and resistance.

All required materials will be supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own if you like. Snacks and drinks will be provided. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch, and there will be an hour’s lunch break.

No previous experience in art is necessary. This is also a great opportunity to build your portfolio.

This activity is for people aged 14 to 19 years old and disabled people aged 14 to 25 years old.

We’ll be in the Forum. To get there, take the lift or stairs up to level 1 and then follow the signs through the ‘Being Human’ gallery.

Booking a ticket for a free event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.

This is a relaxed event, which means that if you need to, you are welcome to move around and make noise at any time.

• Gaby Sahhar is an installation-based painter and filmmaker. Their work aims to deconstruct the representation of queerness within public spheres to understand its wider impacts on queer consciousness and communities.
• Queerdirect is an LGBTQI+ artist network, curatorial platform and arts programme. Formed in 2017, Queerdirect provides artists with a platform for exhibiting offline and online, as well delivering teaching through workshops, tutorials and events.
• Nan Carreira is a non-binary artist. Their work reflects on the conditions and repercussions of being queer through artistic responses such as drawing, painting and collage.
