Life by a Thousand Cuts - Carlos Martinez Solo Exhibition

“Life by a Thousand Cuts,” is a declaration of faith amidst insistent heartbreak and an exploration of what sustains us without yield, yet imperfectly. Through a series of portraits, Carlos allows us to witness the sharp clarity that intimacy and often time, bring.

With portraits including his siblings and closest friends, Carlos offers space to reflect, possibly forgive, somehow restore and yet consider, how do we grow back towards each other?

Through witness. A lit candle. Un cafecito. A card pull. Trial and error.

My brother is ready for new ways to language [his] relationships.

Through evocative portraiture, and revealing symbolism, the surrealist has made his reflections flesh. Here, our greatest lesson, that we do not abandon each other. That we stay together not at all costs but to name our price and be willing to pay it, to celebrate it and negotiate it and at times endure it.

The universe in me recognizes the universe in you. Because it is possible for us to be so expansive that the simple edges of our universes can touch, and it be enough.
