Synopsis

Join Kunal Deshpande, a data researcher and analyst within the UK Government and alumnus of this university, as he shares his journey from campus to real-world impact.

This session introduces the concept of "Data Therapy" - a framework for thinking about data with judgement, context, and responsibility, particularly when data informs decisions that shape society and public policy.

Key themes explored in the session:

  • What is Data Therapy? Understanding data beyond numbers and dashboards
  • Who wins — AI models or common sense? Navigating the balance between automation and human judgement
  • Mind the Gap: Bridging the divide between data analysis and policy decision-making
  • See It. Doubt It. Analyse It. Sorted.
  • A practical approach to critical data thinking

Drawing on his experience across multiple government departments, Kunal will offer candid insights into what to prioritise, what to avoid, and how to make the most of your university years to build a meaningful data career. Attendees will leave with a clearer sense of direction, practical takeaways, and a fresh perspective on working with data that truly makes an impact. The views shared in this session are based on personal experience and reflections as an alumnus of the university.

About the speaker

Kunal Deshpande is a data researcher and analyst working within the UK Government, with experience contributing to impactful work across multiple departments, including supporting policy through data-driven insights. He began his professional journey through a university placement, gaining early exposure to how data is applied beyond the classroom. Since then, he has worked in multidisciplinary environments, supporting decision-making and contributing to initiatives with real-world impact.

His interests lie in the intersection of data, AI, and society, with a strong emphasis on the ethical use of data and responsible decision-making. He is also actively engaged in building professional networks across the industry, recognising the importance of collaboration and shared learning.

Through his work and engagements, he aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, encouraging a more thoughtful and practical approach to working with data. His favourite quote: "Data doesn't lie… but it doesn't tell the truth on its own either." The views shared in this session are based on personal experience and reflections as an alumnus of the university.
