About this Event
Garba is a Gujarati social dance that has been adapted to many different Indian cultures as a way to celebrate collective joy and celebration of the cycles of life. In Indian, as well as many other global cultures, dance is not something you do because you are “good” at it; it’s something you do because it is an act of joy and a celebration of the gift of life. This class is inspired by Garba as well as different aspects of contemporary dance and intended to help improvisers move more freely on stage!
In this six hour, one day intensive workshop, students will learn dance warmups they can perform individually and with a group with a clear through-line to practical on-stage skills! Students will learn different formations and different dynamics in those formations, including how to communicate those formations to others non-verbally on stage and in the moment. The class will culminate in students moving together to find new formations and sequences that rely on observing and taking turns rather than just mirroring which translates directly into creating improvised musical numbers on stage. There is no prerequisite for this class. It is recommended for musical improvisers and anyone who wants to learn a new physical language of movement to express themselves.
Please note that this intensive is very active! Though rest breaks will be included, students should be dressed and ready to move!
Topics in this Course Include:
- Physical warmups that lay the foundation for both non-locomotor & locomotor movement
- Creating complementary movements in pairs
- Mirroring, passing “leadership” of the movement, and playing with focus
- Building collective expressions with variation of movement within the whole group.
