Train your eyes - and your brain - to judge proportional, placement and spacing. Constantly compare visual relationships to make your sketch more accurate without needing rulers or grids.
People want to paint, but are concerned they cannot draw properly. This helps to simplify the process and give you a technique you can use on the spot, urban sketching, and travel journals.
A sketch starts with the largest item in the scene. Everything else is compared to the height, width and angle of this item. Breaking the scene into simple geometric shapes is the first step.
Once the initial largest shape is blocked in then you move onto putting shapes within the shapes. Things such as windows and doors. Using comparisons to determine size and placement within the shapes and the scene as a whole.
This helps simplify the overall scene and reduce the overwhelm with urban sketching. This technique is useful for more than buildings. Once you learn to ‘see’ in this way drawing becomes much more enjoyable and accurate !
