Letters to Ms. 1000 | Black Women in Architecture
Join us at the Civic Design Center for an inspiring event celebrating the careers, contributions, and perspectives of Black women in architecture. Through a panel discussion and book signing, this event will elevate the narratives of five licensed black women architects in Nashville while celebrating the award-winning publication, Letters to Ms. 1000, and announcing its Volume 2 release.
Letters to Ms. 1000, edited by panel moderator Christian Joosse (AIA, NOMA), is a compilation of perspectives from licensed black women architects across the United States. The Directory of African American Architects currently identifies fewer than 700 African American Women Architects who are licensed and practicing in the United States. If the current trajectory is maintained, "Ms. 1000" will become the 1000th licensed around the year 2040. These stories take root at the epicenter of establishing identity, depicting how black women have sculpted themselves from various walks of life and how each share a role in elucidating the current state of the profession, expressing how far it has come and how far it must grow. Copies of Letters to Ms. 1000 will be available for purchase on-site while supplies last!
Light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be provided, followed by a panel discussion with Nashville's licensed Black women architects moderated by Christian Joosse. Book signing and happy hour to follow.
