Discover the joy of birdwatching and get your backyard ready for the summer season!
Learn how to choose the right seeds for the season and different species. Explore a variety of feeder types and features including tips on placement to attract the most birds while keeping birds safe. We’ll also cover the benefits of bird baths, how to keep them clean and inviting, and best practices for attracting hummingbirds. Sharpen your bird ID skills using the free Merlin Bird ID app and learn how to submit sightings to eBird, contributing valuable data for conservation science. Plus, get binocular basics with hands-on experience trying different styles of Vortex Optics binoculars to help you choose the best style for your needs.

Patty McLaughlin BSc, MSc, is the Community Ambassador at Wild Birds Unlimited and Education Program Manager at the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre, where she has years of hands-on experience caring for wild birds and sharing her passion for backyard birding. A lifelong Ottawa bird enthusiast, she loves teaching people how to attract, observe, and care for birds, sharing practical tips on feeders, seeds, bird ID, and citizen science, and inspiring a deeper connection with nature. Her talks are full of fun, hands-on learning and encouragement for anyone wants to begin birding!
NOTES:
a) Workshops are transferable to another person and only refundable if we have people on the waiting list who can take your spot. Please make sure this date works with your schedule.
b) Member-rate tickets are reserved for current Ottawa Tool Library members. If a non-member registers at the member rate, we will follow up to collect the price difference plus a $15 administrative fee.
c) If you are registering for a young person, please note that children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket for the same workshop. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted in many of our workshops (other than Tinkering School and some demo nights).
