Let's talk BABY BIRDS! With Patty from Wild Birds Unlimited

Join Patty McLaughlin, Education Program Manager at the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre, for a fun and informative presentation on May 19th from 6:30-8:30pm.

Patty will share the history and future goals of the Centre and offer an inside look at how a dedicated team of staff and volunteers cares for more than 3,000 injured, ill, and orphaned wild birds each year.

This engaging session will focus on baby birds and nesting season, including fledgling bird ID, how to tell when a young bird truly needs help, when it’s best to leave them alone, and what to do if you find an injured or orphaned bird. Guests will enjoy interactive hands-on displays featuring real bird artifacts, along with captivating photos, fun facts, and inspiring rehabilitation stories.

You’ll also meet Kato, the Centre’s Education Ambassador American Kestrel. We’ll admire his incredible adaptations, learn his unique story, and discover how caring people like you are the first essential step in saving a bird’s life.

The presentation will also spotlight owls! How they live, why they matter, and what makes them remarkable hunters. Participants are invited to dissect an owl pellet to discover the tiny bones from an owl’s last meal.

Patty McLaughlin BSc, MSc, is the Community Ambassador at Wild Birds Unlimited and Education Program Manager at the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre, where she has years of hands-on experience caring for wild birds and sharing her passion for backyard birding. A lifelong Ottawa bird enthusiast, she loves teaching people how to attract, observe, and care for birds, sharing practical tips on feeders, seeds, bird ID, and citizen science, and inspiring a deeper connection with nature. Her talks are full of fun, hands-on learning and encouragement for anyone wants to begin birding!

a) Workshops are transferable to another person and only refundable if we have people on the waiting list who can take your spot. Please make sure this date works with your schedule.

b) Member-rate tickets are reserved for current Ottawa Tool Library members. If a non-member registers at the member rate, we will follow up to collect the price difference plus a $15 administrative fee.

c) If you are registering for a young person, please note that children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket for the same workshop. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted in many of our workshops (other than Tinkering School and some demo nights).
