About this Event
Join us for this in-person event! Enjoy appetizers and drinks as we dive into the oral microbiome. Learn how to collect plaque samples and create biofilm slides for viewing on a phase-contrast microscope, explore the science behind oral hygiene products and medicaments, and gain insight into how your patients’ habits, hygiene, hormones, and diet impact their oral health.
Course Description:
It’s time to get back to basics—and rediscover the powerful connection between what we drink, our saliva, and our patients’ oral health! Let’s Get Basic: Nutrition, pH, and the Beverage Battle for Oral Health is an interactive, hands-on continuing education workshop designed to help dental professionals understand and communicate the biochemical foundations of caries risk and prevention.
This course dives deep into the composition and behavior of dental biofilm, the critical role of saliva flow, buffering, and pH, and the impact of diet and beverage choices on the oral microbiome. Participants will explore the “decay chain” and uncover how nutrition and product formulation influence oral disease progression.
During the hands-on portion, attendees will conduct real-time pH testing of common beverages, analyze results, and discuss strategies to translate this science into meaningful patient education. By combining evidence-based insights with practical experimentation, participants will leave equipped to motivate patients, make smarter nutritional recommendations, and strengthen preventive care outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the relationship between biofilm composition, saliva chemistry, and oral disease.
- Describe how saliva flow, composition, and pH influence demineralization and remineralization.
- Evaluate the acidic potential and pH of common beverages through hands-on testing.
- Apply clinical findings to patient education, helping patients make informed choices for optimal oral health.
Who Should Attend:
Dental hygienists, dentists, and preventive-focused team members passionate about elevating their understanding of oral biochemistry, nutrition, and patient motivation.
Format: Lecture and hands-on workshop
