From the depths of darkness, let there be light.
We are honoured to present Aotearoa New Zealand premiere of Let There Be Light by Ukrainian composer Bohdana Frolyak. Inspired by the war in Ukraine, this “brooding and luminous” work describes the return of the light (Opera Today).
Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, begun in 1913, was similarly written at a time of war. Nevertheless, this music remains enticingly puckish, witty and brilliant — the perfect showcase for our astonishing young prodigy Shan Liu. Previously an NZSO Emerging Artist, in 2024 he performed with the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. Liu is a testament to the wonderful and important work our Education team achieve.
Finally, Tchaikovsky’s magisterial Fourth Symphony, from its foreboding opening fanfare to its galvanising finale, takes us on an epic journey, from fear of destiny to the glowing triumph of hope.
