One of our core values at Boston Avenue UMC is that we embrace a reasoned approach to faith and scripture. Our annual Lenten Lecture Series, presented by Boston Avenue UMC’s Barton-Clinton-Gordey committee, invites you to join us in thinking deeply about faith and scripture through a series of presentations from a distinguished religious speaker or scholar. This year’s guest lecturer is Rev. Dr. David M. Wilson, who currently serves as bishop of the Great Plains Conference of The United Methodist Church.Bishop Wilson, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, holds the distinction of being the first Native American elected to serve as a bishop in the history of The United Methodist Church. Bishop Wilson’s series invites reflection on the histories of Indigenous tribes in Oklahoma, their relationship with the church and government, and the formation of Oklahoma Indian Methodism. Through sermons and lectures, he explores themes of faithfulness and perseverance in the face of displacement, the central values of community and hospitality in Indigenous cultures, and the significance of relationships—both among people and with creation—in shaping ministry and faith.
