Lei-Lei Cinema presents Dislocation 错位 (1986)
About this Event
Join us for the first ever UK screening of Dislocation (错位), Huang Jianxin’s surrealistic 1986 Chinese New Wave science fiction satire, at Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen on Sunday, November 29th, 2026 at 18:30.
The film follows Zhao Shuxin, a newly promoted engineer overwhelmed by endless meetings and bureaucratic duties. To escape the monotony, he creates a robotic double to take his place, but the experiment soon spirals into absurdity as the duplicate begins to enjoy the power, status, and corruption of office life.
Directed by Huang Jianxin, one of the key voices of the Chinese New Wave, Dislocation blends deadpan comedy, retro futurist science fiction, surrealistic imagery, and sharp social critique into a brilliantly unusual portrait of modern life splitting at the seams. Rarely screened on the big screen, this is a chance to experience one of the strangest and most fascinating works of 1980s Chinese cinema.
