Songs and Stories is a new and dynamic way of presenting live music. Lee Zimmerman, a longtime critic, columnist for the Maryville Daily Times and numerous national publications (American Songwriter, Living Blues, Bluegrass Today, Goldmine, etc.), board member of the Southeast Region Folk Alliance, highlighted author in the Library of Congress, musicologist and failed musician, applies the skills, experience and expertise he’s used over the course of his career to interview artists before a live audience and give those in attendance insight and backstories about those performers that they may have not known otherwise. It’s similar in approach to the highly hailed television series “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” except that these conversations are both candid and conversational with ample does of humor tossed in as well. Conversation is interspersed with acoustic performances, making for a well funded evening of music and entertainment.Lee’s first guest, on Thursday, April 24 at 7 pm will be Lance Cowan. Lance is a singular talent, but his skills intersect several realms. A skilled promoter and publicist, he’s been responsible for bringing any number of artists the recognition they so decidedly deserve. However, it’s his abilities as a singer and songwriter that find him making a belated bow. He released his debut album, aptly titled So Far So Good, last year, garnering widespread kudos. His follow-up, Against the Grain, makes it clear it wasn’t a one-shot effort, further evidence that his artistic abilities have floated about in the ethos for some time.
It’s not often that one finds an individual who’s able to straddle both sides of the music divide — that is, the business side and its artistic side simultaneously. Up until now, gained his reputation primarily as a publicist, and a respected one at that. However with So Far, So Good and now, Against The Grain, he makes his mark as a gifted singer/songwriter who also has the draw needed to pull in some formidable support. Clearly then, the album offered every indication that Cowan’s talents extend not only to his knowledge of promotion and PR, but to the sounds that can be shared when all the favorable factors combine and coalesce. Is he a renaissance man? Perhaps. His talent tells all.
Come see for yourself!
Donations are welcomed for the traveling musician.
