📚 Lecture: "When Climate Change Haunts: Parallels in Horror & Climate"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Josh Lown
Cities around the world are investing in green infrastructure — climate-resilient buildings, parks, flood walls — to protect communities from extreme weather. But what happens when these well-intentioned efforts also accelerate displacement?
The concept of green gentrification reveals a troubling paradox: policies meant to protect vulnerable neighborhoods can unintentionally amplify the very inequalities they seek to address. In this lecture, Josh Lown turns to horror cinema — from creature features to folk horror — as a powerful lens for understanding this tension. Through film and research, he explores how responses to environmental harm can produce new forms of violence and displacement.
Together, we’ll confront the unsettling question: Who will survive — and what will be left of them?
Josh Lown is a postdoctoral research fellow at Boston University’s Initiative on Cities. With a background in social work and community-based research, his work examines the intersections of gentrification, climate justice, and urban inequality, drawing from lived experiences in neighborhoods like East Boston, where he resides.
