📚 Lecture: "Neuroscientist Explains: Your Brain, Your Body, Yourself"
🎤 Speaker: Professor Michael Cohen
Join us for an intriguing evening with Professor Michael Cohen, as we delve into the fascinating relationship between the body and the brain. Have you ever considered that your sense of self is an active construction of your brain? In this engaging lecture, Professor Cohen will explore how our perceptions of bodily awareness can go awry in remarkable ways.
We’ll meet individuals with phantom limbs who experience vivid sensations in limbs that no longer exist, explore illusions that make a fake hand feel like one’s own, and discuss somatoparaphrenia, a disorder where patients believe their own limbs belong to someone else—sometimes prompting them to seek surgical removal.
Each of these conditions offers valuable insights into the normally invisible processes of the brain and how it constructs our seamless experience of inhabiting a body. Ultimately, these discussions lead us to ponder a profound question: If our brain shapes every aspect of our bodily experience, what does it truly mean to have a body?
Professor Michael Cohen is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Amherst College and a Research Scientist at the McGovern Brain Institute at MIT.
Don’t miss this opportunity to challenge your understanding of the body-brain relationship with Professor Michael Cohen!
