🧠Lecture: "The Strange & Spectacular Story of Beer in World War II"
🎙️ Speaker: Professor Dan Breen
Wherever American soldiers went across the fighting fronts of World War II, beer was never far behind. This might surprise anyone who remembers World War I, when the U.S. government worked hard to discourage beer consumption. Yet after Pearl Harbor, the American beer industry entered a golden age—just as millions of Americans were leaving home to serve overseas.
How did wartime conditions transform beer from a target of temperance campaigns into a staple of military life? And why did so many Americans get their first taste of beer not in their hometown bars, but in distant places like Ulithi, Luzon, and New Georgia?
In this engaging lecture, Professor Dan Breen uncovers the strange, often spectacular story of beer’s unexpected role in the fight against the Axis, blending military, cultural, and social history.
Dan Breen is a Professor of the Practice of Legal Studies at Brandeis University, with a Ph.D. in History from Boston College. He is currently completing a book on the public monuments of Boston.
