In this engaging lecture, Prof. Yuqing Zhu will trace how the history of AI is deeply intertwined with visual neuroscience, revealing surprising connections between the way your brain sees and how machines interpret images.

You’ll explore key similarities and crucial differences between biological and machine vision, then flip the script to examine how both humans and AI create visual art. Along the way, you’ll gain a richer grasp of your own visual system and the powerful technologies that are constantly “watching” you, plus resources to keep learning after the event.

Prof. Yuqing Zhu is an Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at Pomona College. Her teaching focuses on all things vision: the neurobiology of sight in humans and other animals, machine vision, and visual art. She leads a research lab investigating how close current AI systems are to truly brain-like processing. Outside the lab, she draws portraits and wanders the desert for inspiration.
