π Lecture: "Democracy in Divided Times"
π€ Speaker: Dr. Daniel Ruggles, PhD
Join us for an engaging evening with Dr. Daniel Ruggles as we explore the meaning of democracy and the importance of political engagement in today's polarized climate. In this thought-provoking lecture, we will unpack a working definition of democracy and examine the challenges posed by division within our political system.
Dr. Ruggles will discuss the significance of participation in democracy, how leaders often work to maintain the status quo, and the essential need to strengthen our democratic processes to safeguard fundamental rights. We will also analyze how social movements contribute to polarization and the implications of this activism for our democratic ideals.
Daniel Ruggles is a political scientist focusing on the impact of social movements on our political landscape. His book project, "Building the New Right," investigates the influence of right-wing youth movements on the Republican Party since the 1960s. Currently, he is a Visiting Research Scholar at Brandeis University, examining the contemporary youth right, including groups like Turning Point USA.
