Vision is our most important sense, and for centuries people have dreamed of restoring sight to the blind—captured in the timeless words, “I was blind but now I see.” What was once pure science fiction is now edging into reality.
Join Prof. Joel Zylberberg as he traces the remarkable history of artificial vision, from early, imperfect devices like the Argus implants from Second Sight to cutting-edge breakthroughs from his own lab and collaborators. He’ll explain how “camera to brain translator” algorithms can turn images into patterns of neural activity, and how implantable stimulators may soon “write” those signals directly into the brain—bringing us closer than ever to something like Star Trek’s Geordi La Forge VISOR.
Prof. Zylberberg is the Joan and Jerome Snyder Chair in Vision Science and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at UCLA. His award-winning research focuses on computational models of the visual system, supported by honors such as the Google Faculty Research Award and a Sloan Research Fellowship.
