Dr. Daniel E. Martin will explore the psychological architecture behind our attachment to the familiar, even when it runs contrary to our (or groups we belong to) best interests. Drawing on research from social psychology, organizational behavior, and the science of compassion, we'll unpack why humans often prefer the certainty of an imperfect present over the anxiety of change and its consequences. Using insights from System Justification Theory, Social Dominance, Authoritarianism, Social Identity, and dynamics ranging from the micro, meso, all the way to the macro, we'll have fun revealing how the mind constructs justifying myths to protect the status quo, and what to do in reconsidering, reframing, and transcending them.

Dr. Martin is an Associate Professor of Management at California State University, East Bay, and the Director Corporate Compassion Education at the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University. With extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, he brings a wealth of knowledge on compassion and its effects on workplace dynamics.
