🧠 Lecture: "The Future of Sound Is a Place: Holophonic Audio and XR"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Kerem Ergener
Most of our everyday listening is isolated—headphones, laptops, and phones create private bubbles of sound. This lecture invites you to imagine something different: sound as a shared spatial experience you can walk through, explore, and inhabit together with others.
Dr. Kerem Ergener will introduce holophonic audio, Wave Field Synthesis, and XR as powerful tools for transforming sound from a signal coming out of speakers into an architectural medium that shapes space and place. Learn how immersive audio environments can create a shared atmosphere, influence how we move and interact, and open new possibilities for performance, installation, and everyday listening.
An electronic music composer, multimedia artist, and Assistant Professor of Music Technology at Virginia Tech, Dr. Ergener is known for his architectural approach to sound, blending minimal, glitch-driven electronics with spatial audio, light, and environment. His work and research focus on embodiment through sound and the phenomenology of atmosphere, creating holophonic and immersive listening experiences that democratize music-making and transform how we hear the world around us.
