🧠 Lecture: "Medicine in the Wild: How Animals Heal Themselves"
🎤 Speaker: Jaap de Roode
Many people assume humans are the only species smart enough to use medicine—but the animal world tells a very different story. From ants to apes, bees to bears, cats to caterpillars, animals use remarkable strategies to treat disease and protect their families.
Join Jaap de Roode, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Biology at Emory University, for a fascinating exploration of animal self-Medic*tion. You’ll hear about apes that swallow rough leaves to dislodge parasitic worms, sparrows that line their nests with cigarette butts to repel ticks, and bees that fortify their hives with sticky resins to fight off viruses.
Jaap de Roode directs the Infectious Diseases across Scales Training Program, which prepares graduate students to tackle infectious diseases through interdisciplinary science. He studies parasites of monarch butterflies and honey bees, uncovering how even tiny creatures fight infection. His book, Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves, is published by Princeton University Press.
