🧠 Lecture: "Math & Scandal: The Man Who 'Stole' Infinity"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Joseph Howlett
Join us for a riveting evening as Dr. Joseph Howlett unravels the story behind one of the most astonishing mathematical breakthroughs—and the scandal that may lurk beneath it.
One hundred fifty years ago, Georg Cantor transformed infinity from a philosophical curiosity into a precise, measurable concept and founded modern set theory. His work reshaped the foundations of mathematics. But a recently resurfaced handwritten letter from his friend Richard Dedekind suggests that Cantor’s most famous proof may have been plagiarized, borrowing nearly word for word from Dedekind’s ideas.
What happens when a friendship fractures at the exact moment a scientific revolution is born? And how should we think about credit, originality, and discovery in science today?
Dr. Joseph Howlett, a senior reporter at Scientific American and former particle physicist at Columbia and Stanford, brings together history, controversy, and cutting-edge insight to explore how one disputed proof changed mathematics forever.
